Since 2006, I have been contacted periodically by people across the United States, who claim to have found a quarter with my name (R. THIES) stamped on it. I used to think it was really just some strange COINcidence, but it's stranger than that. Stranger than fiction, even.

Given my propensity for practical jokes and social media snares, I fully expect skeptics who think I am making this up. However, this quarter thing is an actual phenomenon - not a hoax.

I made the map below of states where the quarter has surfaced: Illinois, Michigan, Colorado, California, Washington, Nevada, Alaska, Texas, North Dakota, South Carolina, Florida, New Jersey, Massachusetts. Some people who contacted me never told me where they found the quarter, so I imagine they have surfaced in various other states, as well.

The latest, most recent inquiry came in the form of a letter, from a man in Massachusetts:
Name and City of the person has been deliberately witheld, as a courtesy to them, of course

He included a SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope), so I took the time to decorate it:

[If you find an R. THIES quarter and would like to turn it in, feel free to mail it to the following address: R. Thies Quarter, P.O. Box 12871, Seattle WA 98111]

For the first three years, I had no idea who was stamping the quarters. When I found out in 2009, I kept it a secret. But I decided that now the time has finally come, for full disclosure:

Worth wayyy more than twenty-five cents...if you're lucky enough to find one
Some people have even tried to make a quick buck of of these quarters, hyping them up as some sort of art project by the incredibly famous and ridiculously successful artist: R. THIES

It's funny; this person never contacted me/I have know idea who this person is

In 2008, I received an email from a girl in South Carolina who said she found one of these R. Thies Quarters. I had never seen one firsthand, and so she sent me the one that she had found:

A month after I was contacted by the man in Massachusetts, I was contacted by The History Channel. They were producing a web series, Modern Day Mysteries, and were quite intrigued:

This program streamed on their site in 2014. Here's Part One:

My parents say that they do not know exactly how many of these quarters they stamped with my name while employed by the U.S. Mint, but it had to be tens of hundreds of thousands.
